For Kitten, Sparty, Can Opener, and other feline fans:
If 5 cats can catch 5 mice in 5 minutes …
how many cats does it take to catch 100 mice in 100 minutes?
Note: Treat as a math/logic puzzle with no other variables!
Silent H | September 6th, 2010 at 7:55 am #
Good morning all!
Smerfy | September 6th, 2010 at 8:04 am #
@ Mr. E. I’ll just take a guess and say 100. I never was very good at math/logic puzzles and I’m way to lazy to try to figure it out. Don’t keep me guessing all day. Please post the answer.
@PharmerPhil & Kitten: Will look forward to seeing your new tatoos in person. Phil: Sorry I ruined your lunch yesterday. Hope you recovered by suppertime. hahahahaha. I’m going to check out the Ian Anderson concert, but October is already shaping up to be an unusually busy month for me and the Mr. Would really like to see him as he was one of my all time favorites back in the day when Jesus was an alterboy.
Mr. E. | September 6th, 2010 at 8:19 am #
@ Smerfy – To let others have some fun with it for a while too, I’ll post the answer later in the day.
Critic | September 6th, 2010 at 8:23 am #
@Mr. E. I’ll play and say 5 cats.
Smerfy | September 6th, 2010 at 9:06 am #
Mr. E: OK, I’ll wait until then.

To all you fisherguys and gals. My Hubby is selling his boat and trailer. Here are the details. Sorry, I don’t have pictures cause I’m still living in the dark ages and don’t have a digital camera . . . but am working on it.
BOAT and TRAILOR FOR SALE: 2000 Princecraft 14′ Fishing Boat with 24HP Yamaha Motor. Includes all accessories such as life jackets, gaz tank plus spare gaz tank, boat ptotective cover and other stuff. All in Impecable condition and very gently used. Purchase price was $11500. Asking price $5,5000. Reason for sale: No time to enjoy it. If interested, lemme me know and you can discuss with hubby.
Smerfy | September 6th, 2010 at 9:18 am #
Oppppssss, asking price is $5,500. But will take $5,5000 if your really want to pay that.
Mr. E. | September 6th, 2010 at 9:26 am #
@ Smerfy – in French numeric usage, a comma is equivalent to decimal point, so you’ll easily get some takers here for 5 dollars and 50 cents! (They’ll just interpret the extra zeros on the right as you trying to be very precise!)

Business Trip
On a business trip to India, a colleague of mine arrived at the airport in Delhi. He took a taxi to his hotel, where he was greeted by his hospitable Indian host.
The cab driver requested the equivalent of eight dollars U.S. for the fare, which seemed reasonable, so my friend handed him the money. But the host grabbed the bills and initiated a verbal assault upon the cabby, calling him a worthless parasite and a disgrace to their country for trying to over-charge visitors. The host threw half the amount at the driver and told him never to return. As the taxi sped off, the host gave the remaining bills to my colleague and asked him how his trip had been.
“Fine,” the businessman replied, “until you chased the cab away with my luggage still in the trunk.”
Toyslover | September 6th, 2010 at 9:40 am #
I’m with Critic on the 5 cats. If 5 cats are catching mice at the rate of 1 mouse per minute than 100 mice in 100 minutes is still 1 mouse per minute.

Bonus Puzzle
A farmer (PharmerPhil) living on the other side of the river went to market this morning taking his pup (Mocha) along for the ride. While there, he purchased a chicken (main course) and a bag of rice (side dish) for lunch. On his way back home, PharmerPhil arrived at the river bank and went to put Mocha and his purchases in his row boat, only to discover that the load was too heavy and that he could transport only himself and one other thing (the dog, the chicken, or the bag of rice) at a time.
To make matters worse, he realized that, if left alone together, the hungry young pup would eat the chicken, and the chicken would eat all the rice.
Can you help PharmerPhil get home to Kitten in time for dinner, with Mocha, the main course, and the side dish all safe and sound? Hurry, he’s waiting right now!
Mr. E. | September 6th, 2010 at 10:13 am #
@ PharmerPhil – Mrs. E. tried to help and just reached the conclusion that you “shouldn’t buy all those things” or next time leave Mocha at home! Hope someone helps you soon as there’s less than 2 hours to go!
pharmerphil | September 6th, 2010 at 10:27 am #
@Mr. E – lol as Mrs E is right.
Here is how I would do it but it will take a long time and not sure whether I can do it in 2 hrs. First I take the chicken across the river and leave her there. I then row back across and pick up the dog and row back across. When I get there I pick put the chicken back in the boat and row back across. When I get there I take the chicken out and put in the rice and row back over to leave the rice and my dog (which itself is bad news cause Mocha will eat anything as you already know). I then row back and finally pick up the chicken which really looking forward to its third boat ride of the afternoon. Et voila I know have all three on the same side of the river and get home only to find out that Karen has ordered Mountain Station Pizza for dinner.

Extra Points to Bonus Puzzle
If PharmerPhil lives a half kilometre from the river, the river is 1 kilometre wide where he needs to cross, and the market is a half kilometre from the river, what distance did he cover during his ordeal? Assume at one point, that he also decided to visit a small bar located 100 metres away along the river bank for some refreshment.
Mr. E. | September 6th, 2010 at 10:57 am #
@ Tick – Would have liked to see April Wine again but my computer thwarted my attempt to get free tickets from the radio station online store. They did a freebie concert for Kanata’s Canada Day a few years back and sounded great. Did they play 21st Century Schizoid Man?

@toyslover
my son had informed me after searching on the net that I had messed up. My theory was indeed flawed. At least I now know that I am able to fast talk pharmerphil, and pull the wool over his eyes! Hopefully I can figure out a way to use this information to my advantage sometime. Hehe…
@Mr. E.
I just haven’t figured out why you are trying to artificially boost the post numbers yet, but I’m working on it!

i hope you all have a great day and anyone travelling should take care and be safe….lots of cops out there today
ecofriendly61 | September 6th, 2010 at 1:35 pm #
mr e…some basic assumptions that the cats are willing to keep catching mice and that said mice are available equally as quickly over the period of time and that 5 cats caught 5 mice in total between them in 5 minutes then at that rate, they would in fact catch 100 mice in 100 minutes or 1000 mice in 1000 minutes….
very prolific cats you have in your riddlle….
Mr. E. | September 6th, 2010 at 2:17 pm #
@ eco – those cats are indeed very consistent and tireless mousers, with mice a plenty for the catching! (Smerfy wants to adopt them!)
@ reggae – I was afraid that someone might cheat! Ha ha!
Answers received so far include 1, 5, 20, and 100! My wife also guessed 20 but then gave up immediately and wanted to know the answer.
The puzzle was posed on some sort of commercial/intermission-remark during a TV program last night but they either forgot to follow up with the answer or I missed it. Anywho, I thought some of you would enjoy it (and I was right!).
Can Opener | September 6th, 2010 at 2:24 pm #
@ eco… it would be impossible to not send all my thought’s and hopes for the best possible results for Rose, please let her know that on no uncertain terms she can always count on my support!!!
You and Sue are great friends for Rose to have… you guy’s rock!
BTW, if my cat’s were part of the solution, there would have to be 7.
Sparty | September 6th, 2010 at 2:35 pm #

Mr. E. | September 6th, 2010 at 9:49 pm #
Congrats to Critic, Toyslover, Can Opener, and eco on solving the cat-mouse puzzle! In production terms, the expenditure of 5 cat-minutes yields 1 mouse (for management types, cat-minutes are analagous to man-hours or person-years).
Also, check your e-mail shortly!
Congrats also to PharmerPhil for rescuing himself (and securing a good lunch in the process) when no one would come to his aid in a timely manner earlier today!
@ Can Opener – I have to quote one of the few memorable lines from Caddyshack when Bill Murray told the story about caddying for the Dalai Lama, and feeling that he was about to get stiffed on his tip, asked for “a little something, you know, for the effort.” The Dalai Lama replied, ”Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So, like Bill Murray’s character, you “got that going for [you], which is nice”!
Mr. E. | September 6th, 2010 at 9:57 pm #
@ Hummer – You cheated!
Someone also hilariously countered the original puzzle with the following:
If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, then how long will it take a cockroach to kick all of the seeds out of a cucumber?
